It means that nature and its unwritten laws will continue to function and take its course just like a wooden log moves in the direction of water when put in a river. In his 3000-year old work on Purananuru which talks about the way of order and natural laws, he makes a strong call for unity in mankind. With ‘Kaniyan (கணியன்)’ before his name which refers to Mathematics in Tamil, we can infer that he would have been a Kala Kanithar, an astronomer and a mathematician dealing with date, time and place. Who is Kaniyan Poongundranar? What made him famous? Kaniyan Poongundranar is an inspiring philosopher born and raised at Mahibalanpatti in Sivagangai. Last year, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had quoted another Tamil classic “Purananooru,” to assert that the government was for judicious taxation to see to it that it does not hurt any section of the taxpayers.Hailing from a humble background in Sivagangai, Kaniyan Poongundranar made his way to the United Nations, European Union, and several meetings organized by institutions of international repute with his two popular philosophies in the poems he composed- Purananuru and Natrinai. It meant ‘we belong to all places, and to everyone’, Modi had said, adding this sense of belonging beyond borders was unique to India. Three thousand years ago, a great poet of India, Kaniyan Poongundranar wrote in Tamil, the most ancient language of the world “Yaadhum Oore.” Years ago, the Prime Minister had also launched the Gujarati translation of the treatise.Īddressing the United Nations General Assembly last year, he quoted Tamil poet Kaniyan Poongundranar’s famous phrase, “Yaadhum Oore Yaavarum Kelir.” He had released the Thai version of the ‘Tirukkural’ also during his visit. The Prime Minister has quoted from the ‘Tirukkural’, which offers guidance to people from all walks of life, on earlier occasions too.
